Fall 2017 Solar Facade Competition

Competition challenge:
In small groups (2 to 3 students), design a solar facade for the interior of ArchE conf. room, to provide semi-privacy and exhibit principles of solar facade design which can be tested on the SOUTH facing wall of the SoArch Thermal Lab.

Schedule:

Week 6:  Teams develop their designs in small groups.

Week 7:  Develop competition entry (small groups) of design schemes.
NOTE (revised 11Oct):
Physical model of 4 glass panels and solar facade can be either 1/2″=1′-0″ or 3/4″=1′-0″

Friday 13 October:  All competition entries are due by 2:30pm.
Each group will be allocated one exhibit space (1/2 large desk) in the Datum Studio.

Grading Criteria:

Aesthetics
– Intelligent design (minimizes glare from direct sunlight, provides daylight).
– Possible interesting play of light/shadow.
– Mitigates need for semi-privacy in conf. room.

Constructability
– Realistic construction plan for our class of 35 students.
– Fills the 4 large panels of glass separating conf. room from lobby, but can have 1/4 of the composition removed (one glass panel section), for installation in the Thermal Lab at SoArch.
– 14″ maximum depth from window.
– Structurally sound + durable design:  suitable for exterior application for a few months.

Construction Note:
Week 8: The winning scheme will be finalized between the small group and instructor/TA/MakerStudio staff.
Week 9-13:  Students will be allocated time in the MakerStudio to construct their pieces after class hours.
Week 14, 15:  Assembly of the Solar Facade in the Datum Conference Room.

Suggestions/Tips:
Recommended materials:  Wood, Acrylic, Metal.
Resources:  MakerStudio in EERC and Wood/Metal shops in ETC 1.222.
